Buick celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1953. To mark this milestone, they introduced their first production V8 engine and gave enthusiasts of a modern classic, the Skylark, of which only 1,690 were produced. At $5,000 new, the Skylark was the most expensive Buick available in 1953 (the Roadmaster convertible was only $3,200). Skylarks were equipped with all the luxuries, such as power brakes, power steering, power windows, and a “Selectronic” radio with a power antenna. But the most striking feature of the Skylark was, of course, its unique design. The Skylark features features such as a 3-inch lower windshield, a special convertible top, cut-out rear wheel arches, tapered doors, unique side moldings, and Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels. The interior was also more luxurious with special leather upholstery and dashboard. This beautiful “Matador Red” Skylark has been fully body-off restored and is in concours condition! It is number 72 of 1,690 and was delivered new on February 9, 1953, to Mrs. Evelyn Wilson in Michigan. The name of the first owner (in this case, the lady owner!) was inscribed on the steering wheel. Another fun fact is that this Skylark was used for the Danbury Mint scale models, which naturally seeks the most authentically restored example. It is equipped with the optional and popular “Continental Spare Tire Kit.” The ’53 Skylark is one of the most sought-after post-war American classics! It has a Dutch registration.
